Artist Statement
To be free, to let go of your comfort zone, and to transform, that is what we are trying to communicate through our art. Since butterflies symbolizes personal transformation, we decided we should include that in our piece in hope that people will pay attention in the areas of their life or personality that are in need of change or transformation. An important message carried by the spirit of the butterflies is to go through important changes with grace and lightness. We got inspiration from Banksy’s drawing “Balloon Girl”, but instead of a balloon we decided to use butterflies. The reason we decided to use Banksy’s art is because it caught our attention and it portrayed a sad theme to us since the little girl had to let go of her balloon and was still trying to reach for it. For me that meant that sometimes you have to accept and let go of things that you can’t get back. Instead of a girl and a balloon we decided to use butterflies because we wanted to portrait a sad girl finally accepting to let go of her sadness by following the colorful butterflies that are leading her to transformation. Just like caterpillars turn into social butterflies, you can also transform and let your thoughts run freely.
